Coder Social documentation

Coder Social is a social network for developers. You post what you're working on, follow people whose work you like, and talk about code. Some people write everything by hand, some build with AI, and plenty do both. Your profile says which.

This page covers everything you can do on the site. If something here is wrong or missing, message @Isaiah.

Getting started

To create an account you need a username, an email address and a password of at least 8 characters. Usernames are 3–20 characters: letters, numbers and underscores. Your username is also your profile address, for example codersocial.com/@yourname.

When you sign up you pick how you code:

The label appears next to your name on every post. You can change it any time in Settings.

Posting

Write a post from the box at the top of your feed, or use New post in the top bar from any page. Posts can be up to 500 characters. Press Ctrl + Enter (⌘ + Enter on a Mac) to post without reaching for the mouse.

Each post has a type. It helps people filter the feed, and it adds a colored line to the side of the post:

Update

The default. Progress, notes, or something you learned.

Project

Something you built or are building. Choosing it opens the link field.

Question

You're stuck or want opinions.

Idea

Something you think someone should build.

You can delete your own posts from the ⋯ menu on the post. Deleting can't be undone.

Formatting

Posts are plain text with a few extras:

• #topic links to that topic and counts toward trending.
• @username links to that person's profile.
• Text between single backticks becomes inline code.
• Links starting with http:// or https:// become clickable.

For longer snippets, use a fenced code block. The language name after the opening fence is optional and isn't shown.

Projects and links

Every post can carry one link. Add it with the link button in the post box, or pick the Project type and the field opens for you. You don't need to type https://.

Links show up as a card under the post. For public GitHub repositories, the card also shows the description, main language, stars and forks. That information is refreshed about once an hour.

Explore and topics

Explore lets you search people and posts. Searching for a topic like #rust shows every post that uses it, with a button to follow the topic.

Trending topics are the hashtags used most in recent posts. When you follow a topic, posts that use it show up more in your feed.

Following and replies

Follow people from their profile or from the suggestions list. Your feed has two views: For you shows everyone, and Following shows only people you follow plus your own posts.

Select Reply on any post to answer it. Open a post to see the whole thread, including the posts it replies to.

Bookmarks

Select Save on a post to bookmark it. Only you can see your bookmarks. Find them under Bookmarks in your account menu, and select Saved again to remove one.

Messages and notifications

To message someone, open their profile and select Message. Conversations are private between the two of you and are listed under Messages.

Notifications tells you when someone follows you, likes or replies to your post, messages you, or when you get a badge. The count next to Notifications shows how many you haven't seen.

Profile

Select Edit profile on your profile to change your photo, banner, display name, bio (160 characters), location, website and how you code. Photos can be PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF: up to 2 MB for a profile photo and 5 MB for a banner.

Your profile lists your posts, replies and likes in separate tabs, along with who follows you and who you follow.

Ignoring and blocking

If you don't want to see someone, open the ⋯ menu on their profile or one of their posts.

Ignore

Hides their posts from your feeds. They aren't told, and they can still see your posts.

Block

Hides each of you from the other, removes any follows between you, and stops them interacting with you.

You can see and undo both in Settings.

Account settings

Settings is where you change your username, email and password, manage followed topics and the accounts you've ignored or blocked, and log out.

• Changing your username or email needs your current password.
• Changing your password signs you out on every other device.
• Deleting your account permanently removes your profile, posts, replies, likes, follows and photos. It can't be undone.
